This early life organism ( microbial mats) is a multi-layered sheet of micro organism ( prokaryotes) which include mostly bacteria,but also Archaea.
Microbial mats are said to survive, thrive or inhabitate in different environment either on moisture environment or submerged environment and few of them can successfully adapt and survive in deserts. Prokaryotes in a microbial mats are held together by a glue-like sticky substance that they secrets called Extracellular Matrix.
According to research, the first microbial mats are likely to obtained their energy from chemicals found near an hydrothermal vents.A hydrothermal vent is a fissure on the seafloor from which geothermally heated water discharge.
Microbial mats depends on hydrothermal vents for energy and chemical food, but the development of photosynthesis allow mats to spread more abundantly or to increase in number to outside of these environment by making use of the available energy source.
